Project Tongariro

Project Tongariro has been a trusted conservation hub in the Central Plateau for over 40 years. Grounded in values like manaakitanga and mahi tahi, we work alongside iwi, hapū, landowners, agencies (including Taupō District Council, Waikato Regional Council and the Department of Conservation), and community groups to restore and protect te taiao. We’re the driving force behind Greening Taupō, Kids Greening Taupō and Predator Free Taupō, and we lead major restoration projects at places like Lake Rotopounamu (Forest Restoration), Te Matapuna Wetlands (restoration), and throughout Tongariro National Park and its surrounding communities.

Our team of nine staff spans from southern Ruapehu through to Taupō, supported by a passionate volunteer governance board, 500+ members and over 1,000 regular volunteers. We successfully bid for funding to deliver high-impact environmental projects and prioritise local contractors wherever possible.
